Since the bike benefit was introduced at the beginning of 2021, company cycling has not only gained media attention even in mainstream media but has also grown exponentially in popularity. What is it all about? A company bike is a bicycle leased by an employer to an employee, which may be used legally during personal leisure time as well. Using the bike benefit doesn’t obligate the employee to cycle for all commutes nor does it impact other benefits or compensations.
Our company bike partners specialize in providing company bikes. They manage all tasks related to the acquisition and management of company bikes, so no extra tasks arise for the employer. We partner with most companies in Finland offering company bike acquisition and management services, providing you and your employer with the option to choose the best partner.
For employees, a company bike offers the opportunity to acquire a high-quality bike at a very affordable price. There is no need for upfront payment, as its taxable value is deducted from the salary monthly. If desired, the employee can purchase the bike for themselves with a predetermined percentage of the purchase price. Different service providers may have variations in agreements, but often the purchase is possible for about 5% of the purchase price.
Because the bike benefit is a tax-free fringe benefit for employees, you don’t have to pay taxes on the portion of the salary covered by the bike benefit. The common practice to utilize this benefit is that the employee withholds the taxable value of the bike benefit from the salary, which also reduces your income by the same amount as the taxable value. And when your taxable income decreases, so does your tax rate. Your salary level affects the advantage you gain from the bike benefit. By purchasing the bike after the lease period, the average Finnish employee saves around 20-25% of the purchase price compared to a scenario where the bike was bought directly without the benefit.
The company bike can be equipped with desired accessories at the purchase time, and periodic maintenance can be included in the purchase price. When maintenance is needed, simply come to our shop – the rest is already taken care of.
