Electric bike winter maintenance - the best maintenance and riding tips for frosty days
An electric bike is also an excellent means of transport in winter, as long as the basics are taken into account. Winter frosts, slush and road dust can take their toll on the battery, electrical components and riding comfort. Fortunately, a few simple tricks will ensure that your e-bike runs reliably and safely, even in the middle of January's blustery winds.

1. 🔋 Take care of the battery - the heart of an e-bike deserves heat
Cold weather affects battery performance and range. Winter is a challenging time for the battery. Cold weather can reduce the range of your battery by up to a third, so protecting it is the most important thing you can do for your e-bike.
- If you drive a lot in winter, consider a spare battery - that way your bike won't break down on a long commute.
- If possible, always store the battery at room temperature, when the bike is not in use.
- Charge the battery indoors - avoid charging in a cold storage room, for example
- Avoid draining the battery completely in freezing temperatures, as this can shorten battery life.

2. 💧 Keep electrical parts dry - salt and moisture are enemies!
The most sensitive parts of an e-bike are the motor and battery connectors and the steering electronics. The Finnish winter is not kind to them, as mud and road salt find their way into every crevice.
- Use Moisture barrier spray on the connectors on a regular basis.
- Wipe the bike after each run, especially if the roads are salted.
- Do not use a pressure washer - water can penetrate the connectors. The best tool is warm water, a light detergent and a soft cloth.
- Store your bike in a place protected from rain and snow, such as a bike shelter or a warm storage room.

3. 🛞 Winter tyres - grip like a reindeer on ice with studs
Perhaps the most important! Just like a car, the tyres are the most important safety factor on an e-bike. Winter tyres, especially those with studs, make riding much more stable and safer.
- IMPORTANT: Get proper winter tyres! Get proper snow tyres bite the ice and prevent slipping.
- Be sure to check tyre pressures regularly - cold air will drop the pressure surprisingly quickly. Tyres that are too flat make the bike heavy and very slippery.
- Consider different stud patterns: a densely studded tyre offers the best grip, while a less studded tyre rolls more easily.

4. 💡 Let there be light. Show up and stand out with proper lights.
In the winter, bright time is in the cards, so proper lighting is not just a convenience, but the cornerstone of security. On an e-bike, you're often moving faster than on a normal bike, so visibility is always more important.
- Select efficient front light, preferably at least 500 lumens, so you can see and be seen.
- Backlight flashing status noticeably increases the attention of fellow road users.
- A reflective vest, tyre reflectors and even a helmet-mounted headlamp will make you a star on the winter roads.
- Remember to charge your lights regularly - otherwise your journey could literally end in darkness.
