Central bearings
The central bearing is a key part of the wheel transmission, connecting the crankset to the frame and allowing the pedals to rotate smoothly. A high quality centre bearing reduces friction, improves pedalling efficiency and lasts a long time under heavy use. Central bearing types External central bearings: The bearings are located outside the frame, which increases rigidity and reduces weight. Common on off-road, road and gravel bikes. Integrated centre bearing (Press Fit): bearings are pressed inside the frame, providing a minimalist and lightweight design. Four-spindle centres: an older type with a square axle. This is particularly suitable for basic and urban bikes. Hollowtech and GXP: Modern systems combining rigidity and lightness. Common on higher performance bikes. Central bearing maintenance and replacement Wear: Central bearings are subject to constant stress and can wear out over time. Signs of wear include squeaking, skidding or uneven pedalling. Regular maintenance: includes cleaning and greasing of bearings. Some modern bearings are maintenance-free and only require replacement when worn. Compatibility: When choosing a bearing, it is important to consider the compatibility of the centre type of the frame and the crankset. A well-maintained, high-quality centre bearing makes pedalling efficient, smooth and comfortable. It is an essential part of your bike's performance and riding experience.
