Bearings
Bearings - the foundation of smooth motion and durability. Bearings are the key components of the wheel that allow the pulleys, crankset, handlebar bearings and pedals to rotate smoothly. They reduce friction and distribute the load, improving ride comfort and wheel performance. Bearing types: sealed bearings: common on modern wheels, maintenance-free and well protected against dirt and moisture. When a sealed bearing wears out, it is completely replaced. Open bearings: a traditional solution where bearings can be dismantled, cleaned and lubricated. They require regular maintenance, but are long-lasting and easy to service. Conical and cup bearings: used especially in old hubs and guide bearings where the conical bearings are pressed into the cup-shaped part. These can be accurately adjusted and serviced. Location of bearings on the wheel: Hubs: Allow the wafers to rotate. Central bearing: transmits power from the crankset and allows smooth pedalling. Steering bearing: Enables precise steering and smooth movement. Pedals: Small bearings allow the pedals to rotate under the foot. Maintenance and replacement: regular inspection, cleaning and lubrication of the bearings prolongs their life. Worn or damaged bearings can cause squeaking, backlash or resistance, which can degrade the riding experience.
