Brakes
Wheel brakes - the basis for safety and control
Brakes are one of the most important components of a bike, providing control, reliability and above all safety in all riding conditions. High-quality and properly maintained brakes ensure that you can stop quickly and in control, whether it's a sudden situation in urban traffic or a technical downhill on a forest trail. The choice and maintenance of your bike's brakes directly affects your riding experience and bike performance.
Why are brakes an important part of the cycling experience?
Well-functioning brakes not only increase safety, they also improve ride comfort and bike handling. Brake efficiency and responsiveness can play a crucial role, especially in bad weather, off-road or in fast urban traffic.
When choosing brakes, it is worth considering the following:
- Driving style and environment - Urban cycling, mountain biking and road cycling require different levels of braking efficiency and durability.
- Brake power and reaction time - Stopping quickly can be crucial in an emergency.
- Ease of use and maintainability - Some brakes require regular adjustment, while others are virtually maintenance-free.
- Weight and durability - The lighter brakes are ideal for road cycling, while the more durable brakes provide support for off-road riding.
Types of wheel brakes and their characteristics
1. Vane brakes - A light and easy solution
Vane brakes are one of the most common and longest-lasting types of brakes. They work by pressing the brake pads against the wheel rim, creating friction and slowing the wheel down. They are lightweight, inexpensive and easy to maintain, but their performance can deteriorate in wet conditions or after prolonged use.
- Benefits: Lightweight, affordable and easy to maintain.
- Uses: Road bikes, city bikes, touring bikes.
- Points to note: Less effective in wet and muddy conditions.
2. Disc brakes - Maximum power and control
Disc brakes provide excellent braking performance and work reliably whatever the weather conditions. They are divided into two main types:
- Hydraulic disc brakes - These brakes offer superior stopping power and precise response, and are particularly popular on off-road and electric bikes. Hydraulic brakes adjust automatically and require less hand effort.
- Mechanical disc brakes - Mechanical disc brakes are simpler and cheaper, but require more force and regular adjustment.
- Benefits: Very effective braking, works in all weather conditions.
- Uses: Mountain bikes, electric bikes, gravel and cyclocross bikes.
- Points to note: Hydraulic brakes require more maintenance and are more expensive than mechanical alternatives.
3. Drum brakes - A simple and maintenance-free option
The drum brakes are located inside the hub of the wheel and provide a long-lasting and virtually maintenance-free solution. Drum brakes are durable and ideal for urban bikes where reliability and low maintenance are required.
- Benefits: Long-lasting, weatherproof and low maintenance.
- Uses: City bikes, electric bikes, touring bikes.
- Points to note: Heavy construction and poorer braking performance compared to disc brakes.
4. Foot brakes - Easy to use and safe
The foot brakes work by pedalling backwards, slowing the bike down. They are common on children's bikes and city bikes. Foot brakes are simple to use and well suited to beginners and everyday use.
- Benefits: Easy and reliable to use.
- Uses: City bikes, children's bikes.
- Points to note: Braking performance can be limited on steep downhill gradients or at high speeds.
Brake maintenance - Ensure a safe and smooth driving experience
Regular maintenance is key to the reliability and longevity of your bike's brakes.
Important maintenance measures:
- Replacing brake pads - Worn brake pads reduce braking performance. Check and replace them regularly.
- Checking the brake discs - On disc brakes, the brake discs can wear or warp. Replace or straighten as necessary.
- Adjustment and lubrication of gears - In mechanical brakes, the brake cables can stretch and require regular adjustment.
- Hydraulic brakes air release - Hydraulic brakes may need to be vented to ensure that the brakes work effectively without air bubbles in the system.
Choosing the right brakes and keeping them in good condition will ensure a safe and enjoyable cycling experience in all situations.
