What is the principle of a studded tyre on a wheel?<\/h2>\n

Studded tyres work mechanical grip<\/strong> on the principle of small metallic pins penetrating ice and hard snow. The pins are typically made of tungsten carbide and are strategically placed in the outermost layer of the tyre.<\/p>\n

The stud is made up of a metal body and a hard tip shaped to optimise grip on ice. The studs are positioned in the tyre so that they extend about 1-2 mm outside the tyre surface. This allows them to penetrate the ice under the weight and movement of the wheel.<\/p>\n

The rubber composition of studded tyres is designed to remain flexible even in cold conditions. The softer rubber compound improves the studs' ability to adapt to surface irregularities and maximises the contact area with ice. The studs provide grip under both braking and acceleration, but especially in lateral slip prevention.<\/p>\n

When should you use studded tyres on your bike?<\/h2>\n

Studded tyres on the wheel<\/a> should be changed when the temperature drops permanently below zero and the roads start to be icy. In Finnish conditions this typically means from the end of October to the beginning of April<\/strong> depending on the area and weather conditions.<\/p>\n

Studded tyres are particularly necessary in the following conditions: icy cycle paths and streets, frozen snow that has hardened, frosty mornings and evenings when surfaces freeze quickly, and spring meltwater freezing at night.<\/p>\n

Tyres should be changed in good time before the first frosts of winter. Changing too early will wear the studs unnecessarily on the asphalt, while changing too late can lead to dangerous situations. Studded tyres should be stored in a cool, dry place during the summer season and their condition should be checked before the next winter's use.<\/p>\n

How do studded tyres affect the driving dynamics of the bike?<\/h2>\n

Studded tyres significantly change the feel of cycling by increasing rolling resistance and noise<\/strong> compared to conventional tyres. Rolling resistance increases by about 10-20%, which means that pedalling requires more force at the same speed.<\/p>\n

Audibly, studded tyres make a distinct squeaking noise when driving on asphalt, when the studs hit a hard surface. This noise is significantly reduced on icy surfaces where the studs penetrate the surface. Driving comfort is improved on icy surfaces because the grip is better and the wheel does not slip unexpectedly.<\/p>\n

Manoeuvrability also changes with studded tyres. Traction in corners and turns is much better on icy surfaces, but on dry asphalt, studded tyres can feel a little unstable. Braking distances are significantly reduced on slippery surfaces, but on dry asphalt they can be slightly longer than with normal tyres.<\/p>\n

How long do studded tyres last on a bike?<\/h2>\n

Studded tyres typically last 3-5 winters<\/strong> in normal use, depending on the amount of driving and conditions. Studs wear out gradually and become less effective as they shorten or come off the tyre completely.<\/p>\n

You can monitor pin wear by looking at the length and number of pins. When more than half of the pins are significantly worn or loose, the tyre's grip is significantly reduced. The rubber composition of the tyre also hardens over time, reducing the quality of grip.<\/p>\n

Proper storage will significantly extend the life of your studded tyres. Tyres should be stored in a dark, cool and dry place, preferably hanging or on a flat surface. Sunlight and heat accelerate rubber ageing. Before storage, tyres should be cleaned of dirt and salt, which can corrode the studs and accelerate wear.<\/p>\n
